India in lotta

Thousands of peasants and students take to the streets in India

On December 30 thousands of peasants called for a shutdown and blocked roads at many places across Punjab. The mobilization was called to be observed from 7 am to 4 pm. The peasants carried out a sit-in affecting the vehicles’ movement in a national highway. This mobilization severely affected all the communications in the region. Hundreds of trains have been canceled. The buses have not drive and moreover, the private bus companies’ drivers have joined the mobilization in solidarity with the peasants.

Thousands have taken to the streets, mobilizing, shutting down the shops and restricting the transport on

the roads inside the cities. Also the schools and many offices have been closed. Additionally hundreds of peasants marched to Delhi being brutally repressed by the police officers of the state of Haryana.

The peasants demand a debt waiver, pension for peasants and countryside’s workers, no hike in electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases against the protesters and a minimum support price, a legal guarantee for all crops. As we reported months ago, these are demands done by the Indian peasantry from a long time ago and were also present during the previous protests in 2024.

The old Indian State is also facing big mobilizations on the other corner of the country, in Bihar, were hundreds of students mobilized on December 29 and 30, called for a strike and attempted to march towards Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s residence.

The students are demanding the re-examination for an exam. The old Indian State has responded by unleashing a brutal repression: a First Information Report (FIR) has been done against 700 students. The police used many different means of repressions such as water cannons and baton charges. There are also two tutors detained under the charges of “instigating students”, according to local police officers.

The old Indian State usually deals with these type of protests with the same formula: unleashing a fierce repression, detaining many protesters, beating up demonstrators, etc. But this was also done on the peasant protests at the beginning of 2024 and after this, the protests erupt again. This repression only fuels the people’s rebellion.
