IB sounds alert in Red Corridor, the Reds observing ID Day as a Black Day
The Intelligence Bureau has sounded an alert across Maoist-affected states, asking states to be ready to the Reds attacking security forces, schools and rail tracks as part of its effort to observe Independence Day as a “Black Day”. “The outfit may resort to demonstrative acts of violence by targeting security forces and government properties including roads, railways and telecommunication infrastructure,” a senior security officer said, citing an intelligence alert.
The alert – based on a string of inputs received over the past few days – has also listed locations that were on the radar of the Maoists who have killed 237 people this year. “If the Independence Day is a Black Day, do the Maoists want the Britishers to the country,” the official asked. The officer pointed to a campaign by the Maoists to try to hoist black flags and banners on government buildings as well as force people to carry out torch light processions against the State in its strongholds, particularly in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Odisha.
Maoists lodged in jails are also expected to boycott Independence Day celebrations inside jail premises. Government sources indicated that there were reports of mobilisation of Maoists in Bijapur and Kanker districts of Chhattisgarh and block roads in Bastar district too. Senior security officials overseeing the anti-Maoist operations said there were reports of mobilisation by the Maoist cadres and their front organisations in five districts of Jharkhand including West Singhbhum, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Giridih, and Koderma district.“The idea is to make their presence felt and they could target trains passing through the state,” one of them said.

Rise in women cadre involved in Maoist attacks
NEW DELHI: The number of women cadres of the CPI-Maoist involved in attacks and encounters with security forces has increased perceptibly. Women constitute about 30% of Maoist members. About one-third of the Maoists killed in encounters with security forces this year are women.
Of the 65 Maoists killed by security forces this year, 23 are women, said a source. Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, minister of state for home affairs R P N Singh said, “In recent incidents of Naxal attacks, participation of a substantial number of female cadres has been observed. A large number of female cadres have also died in exchanges of fire with the security forces.” The Maoist unit that attacked a train in Bihar killing three persons comprised a large number of women cadres.
